SIGNALLER USEFUL
OTACO HURDLES WINNER
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
DUNEDIN, June 16.
Signaller scored his second successive win in the Otago Hurdles, carrying 101b more than last year. He was not produced again at the meeting, but it is likely he will be taken north for more important events. He stays well, and is at home on heavy going. The Australian apprentice i. A. Jones, scored his second winning ride .in New Zealand when he brought Nightform home an easy winner on the first day at Dunedin, but he failed to ride a winner after that. His first winning ride in the Dominion was on Bonnie Agnes at Motukarara in March. The Waimate-trained 'chaser, Snowy Dawn, is more than a useful hack fencer, but has a bad habit of running off. She showed no inclination to do so when winning the Tahuna Steeplechase on the first day at Wingatui, but the next day ran off at the first fence. T. Hobbs, who turned out most winners at the meeting, was successful in taking two of the three trial races. The middle day's winner, Scrap, a five-year-old by Cockpit—Enmity, showed some promise on his home course last month, but was bad at the barrier. R. J Mackie got him out well at Dunedin, and after lying just behind Vallock to the straight, he came on to win easily. He requires handling, but should soon settle down. . Dissemble surprised by- staying out seven furlongs in the race for apprentice riders on the middle day. However, she beat a poor and tired lot, of whom, perhaps. Scrap might have been more troublesome if his rider had not rushed him throueh the field after a slow beginning. This was Dissembles first race after a spell, and it was her second win. She beat a trial field at Wintsatni two seasons back. _ The Ellis family were prominent at the Dunedin Meeting. A. E. rode most winners L. J. two. pnd A. S trained two winners and E. J. one. . , ~_ Mary Pratt was supported confidently by her connections on Saturday, and thoush she ran on much better tnan on Thursday, was only a moderate No'fewer than four horses who were rested in between the first and third days at. Wingatui succeeded on Saturday They were Alma. Norseman. Queen Dorothy, and Soliad.
