HUTT TEMPERANCE LEAGUE

The annual meeting of the Lower Hutt Temperance League was held last evening. There was a fair attendance. Mr. A. Gerrie presided.

.The officers elected for the coming year were: President, Mr. A. Gerrie; secretary, Mr. J. Rusden Salt; treasurer, Mr. F. Feist.

The league resolved to take for its watchword for the year,, "Regulation and education." In carrying out the second portion of the watchword it was decided, to commence an interdenominational band of hope under the'leadership of Pastor Sterling. The first meeting will be held on June 25.

Several reports were given of active work done to prevent breaches of the licensing laws. Special mention was made of after-hours and Suuday traffic.

The newly-constituted Indian province of Orissa" can possibly claim to have the smallest postman in the world in its service. He is Dhoopana Kamanna, aged 48, and is only 3ft 9in in height. Although a dwarf, Kamanna is perfectly proportioned. He has been kept in the service on account of his smartness and devotion to duty. Kamanna has a family of six—all of normal build. His wife is lift taller than her husband.
