CLUB OUTINGS

FIRST OF SEASON

The first club outings of the season, were held by Wellington harrier clubs on Saturday afternoon. The fine'weather, while welcomed by most people, was on the warm side for distance | running. j BROOKLYN CLUB. » The Brooklyn harriers were the i guests of Mr. F. W. Moore, the presiI dent, from whose residence the run was | 'held. A fine muster attended, includ-| ing seven new members. Two packs started on a mild, run over the hills of Mount Victoria and back along the Evans Bay Road. . At Balena Bay a short run-in was held. In this some fine bursts of speed were seen, notably between R. Cowie and G. Appleby, the former. winning by a narrow margin. Close behind Appleby came- the veteran J. B. Bibby, who ran easily into third place. The members were entertained by , Mr. and Mrs. Moore at afternoon tea. Mr. R. Watterson, club captain, addressed the members and introduced Mr. R. A. Wright, .M.P., ,the Brooklyn harriers' patron and ex-presi-dent and supporter, of many years' standing. Mr.'Wright,: in his address, wished the club every: success for the current season and congratulated it on its successes last season. He also thanked Mr. and Mrs. Moore for their hospitality. , . , : , SCOTTISH^ CLUB. The, Scottish Club's run was held from the Island Bay Life-saying Club's sheds, 45 runners participating. '"■';' . The season was declared open by the club president,-Mr. W. A. Baudinet, who welcomed the new members and expressed pleasure in seeing so .many of the old runners still turning out. v ■ Among the newcomers, L. McLachlan, of Dunedin, a New Zealand track representative at the Melbourne Centenary Games, and A. Bourgeois, of Wanganui, will be decided assets to both the club and Wellington Province.'.',-..','

The runners were in one pack, under the control of the club captain, G. D. Foster, with Clement , and .Tritt pacemakers and Riddington (vice-captain) whipper-in. After being sent away, by the president, the runners turned,down Trent Street, back past the terminus, and into Derwent Street. The hill was then climbed, passing through the pines at the back of the Crow's Nest and on to the gorse and boggy country beyond. Crossing Severn Street, the ridge was followed for about half , a mile, and then the steep descent was. made to Happy Valley Road, which was followed- to Ohiro Bay. j A- steady pace was maintained to the Run-around, where the runners retraced their stepsto Ohiro Bay and went \ along ■ the beach road to Island Bay. '

A.recdrd gathering of some 60 members and supporters of the Wellington Methodist Harrier Club met at'the Hataitai Methodist Church. , The president, the Rev. James. Richards, declared the season open,' after, wishing the; club a very, happy and successful season and welcoming -the new members. ■ :Mrs.::E. M. Ingram, the .club's first lady vice-president and donor of the beautiful Rowland's, trophy, was accorded musical honours.*"'.-'.'' ;' . v Thirty-eight runners set off in. four packs under the leadership of N- Chisholm, B. Burton, J. Walker, and D. Walker on a good trail of about, five miles, from the' church,1 down Moxham Avenue, along the side of'Mt. Victoria to the Constable Street fire station, down Crawford Road, through ■Childers Terrace to Queen's Drive, along Lyall Bay beach, through the4upins, over the hill, down by Scots College, along Broadway and Coutts Street to the sea' front, through Kilbirnie Park, into Moxham Avenue, up Tapiri Street and down William Street.: .

After the run, members and supporters had afternoon tea, supplied by the management committee ; and; served by Mesdames E. M. Ingram and G. Ingram and the" Misses B. Andrews, H. Beach, and ; E. Lowis. After some instructions to members, the captain, J. Walker, thanked the ladies, and the singing of the club song concluded a very enjoyable afternoon. ... . . :

Next week's run is to be from=Brooklyn. | ' .....'.', .:. _ ~.'■ ; OLYMPIC CLUB. The Olympic Harrier Club held' a five-mile run, commencing at the Poneke Football gymnasium, Hataitai. Tw"enty senior members and five colts attended. Mr. J. A. Perston (club.president) and Mr. C. W. Phipson (vicepresident) were ; also., present. ;■ Mr. Perston declared the club's season open and welcomed the new members.

The seniors with,the club captain,' A. O. Fisher, in charge, proceeded up Hataitai Road, round via Rakau Road, to Roseneath and thence part of the way down' Palliser Road. There the pack left the road and climbed.up the hillside to the road along the top of Mount Victoria. The run continued along this road towards/ Newtown, descending '-. into Mem Street . and proceeding via Coromandel, -.Constable, and Owen Streets to the foot of Melrose Hill; The course then followed the road to the top of Melrose Hill and the homeward trail led down Duncan Terrace : into. Kilbirnie and back to Hataitai. A good pace was kept up all the way, last year's A grade representatives.showing up well,.while some of the-new members also showed promising/form. . . ';

A run-in was field .'along Moxham Avenue and resulted in a;win for D. Sunderland, with L. Meyers second, and F. Reeves (a first-year member), third. The colts' run-in was won by K. Mai, with L.Goetzlof and A. Matthews in second and third places respectively. Next Saturday's run is to start from the Baptist Church Hall, Berhamporei WELLINGTON CLUB. A large attendance of members and supporters was present for the first official run of the Wellington Club at Seatoun. The pack, under the club captain, H. Brady, and the vice-cap-tain, W. Owens, followed a varied course of about four miles. The handicap rum-in resulted in a win for N. Smith by", three yards . from G. Rowberry, who was half a yard ahead of R. Wakelin. . • '. .

Next week's run is to be held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. O'Brien, 19 Te Whiti Street, Kilbirnie. UNIVERSITY CLUB. The University Club held their run from Weir House. They ran' along Upland Road, through Northland to the top of Mt. Etako, down the eastern spur to Tinakori Road, and home via the Botanical Gardens. .-Afterwards the runners were given afternoon ,tea by Professor T, Hunter, warden of Weir House. Messrs. G. F. Dixon (president of the club), H. McCormick ' (vice-pre-sident), and G. C. Sherwood (coach), were present to wish the. club success in the new season. ■•:' HUTT VALLEY CLUB. The president, Mr. H. A. Walker, opened the 1937 season of the Hutt Valley harriers at Hutt Park," approximately 25 runners being sent away on a four-mile run. The runners were in one pack under the leadership of V. Smith (club captain) . Messrs. Hurly and Patterson acted as pacemakers and B. Walker as whipper in. The course started from Hutt Park and. went across Bell's paddocks to the railway, workshops, then to White's Line (East), across the railway bridge, along the Hutt River stopbanks, and back to the starting point. The run over, afternoon tea was served. Musical items by the Hutt harrier piano-accordion band concluded a pleasant afternoon. ■ Next week's run is to be from Huu Park at 2.30 p.m.
