Rear-Admiral H. T. Mayo, American naval commander-in-chief in*the World War, died at Portsmouth, Newhampshire.
Bear-Admiral Henry T. Mayo was born in 1856 and graduated at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1876. He advanced through the grades to rearadmiral, in June, 1913, and was promoted to admiral on the retired list in "June,' 1930. He served on1-various vessels of the U.S. Navy, also on both naval and coastal survey, and has been Commandant of the Mare Island Naval Yard, Aid for Personnel at the Navy Department, Commander of the 4th Division of the Atlantic Fleet, and Commander of the battleship squadrons of the Atlantic Fleet. In 1916, when he was promoted admiral, he hoisted his flag on the Pennsylvania and was appointed Commander-in-Chief of. the Atlantic Fleet. In 1914 he demanded an apology and the firing of a salute to the American flag by Mexico for the arrest of a paymaster and the crew of a dispatch boat at Tampico. During the entire period of America's participation ,in the World War he was Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet; having under him all vessels in United States or European waters. 'He represented the United States at the naval conference of Allied nations in London in September, 1917, and in 1918 made an inspection trip of all U.S. naval activities in Britain, France, and Italy. In June, 1919, he hauled down his flag as Commander-in-Chief and reverted to the permanent rank ,of rear-admiral, his'command then changing to the formation of Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. In '1920 he was retired on account of his age and in 1924-28 was governor of the United States Naval Home at Philadelphia.
