CLERICAL WORKERS
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Can anyone enlighten me as to what plan or programme the present Government has to absorb into economic life the several thousand clerical workers, some of whom for months and years have not received a pennypiece, except that granted for sustenance, and who are seemingly left without hope. Some of these men are qualified accountants, grading down to all sorts and conditions of clerks, and whilst it is true they are receiving sustenance, there does not seem any real move by the' Government. to absorb this class into effective use, say, by rationed work, and. the new • clerical awards aggravate the position rather than the reverse, as female labour at lower rates of pay will become more pronounced in the occupation. Manual and skilled labour does seem to have had attention by the Government, but the clerical section seems just as badly off as ever; and I think they deserve some constructive thought by our leaders. —I am, etc., • PEN.
