BANANA SHIPMENT A RECORD RAINFALL The correspondent of the United Press Association at Rarotonga writes as follows: — The fruit shipment fay the Matua comprises 2132 cases of bananas. The majority of the shipment, it is understood, has been sold, only a small amount going forward to consignment. Growers were paid 2s 6d a case by firms in the packing shed and 3s a case delivered at the wharf. The Growers' Association prices were 4s and 4s 3d respectively. A record rainfall was registered at Rarotonga on December 10, when the figures were 9.63 inches at the wireless station and 11.4 inches at Avarua. These figures, which were for twenty-four nours, are the highest for nine years. Advice has been received that the New Zealand Government has reimposed the duty on copra at the rate Df twenty shillings a ton, to operate :rom December 31. Owing to the low price of copra, this export duty was suspended on exports from the Cook [slands on January 1, 193 G. The latest quotation from London for sun-dried :opra was £19 17s 6d a ton. Mr. G. Robinson, Superintendent of Radio, Rarotonga, and Mr. A. McKen:ie, Education Officer, left aboard the Vlatua on four months' furlough in New Zealand. Captain and Mrs. Viggo Rasmussen were tendered a farewell dance prior ;o their departure for Penrhyn, where Captain Rasmussen will take up the position of Resident Agent.
