GENERAL RAIN

STRONG WINDS LIKELY Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate easterly winds, turning to the south-cast and becoming strong. Weather dull and misty and steady rain probable. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for north-easterly to northerly winds. These will be of strong to gale force north of Wanganui and Napier. Elsewhere they will be light to moderate, but will increase later in the Cook Strait area and back to the south-east. The weather will be cloudy to overcast, and misty or foggy in many places. General rain is probable, with heavy falls from Nelson and Marlborough northwards, and with some flooding in the North Island. Temperatures will be warm. A complex depression has moved gradually across the Tasman Sea, centres of lowest pressure being located this morning west of the Auckland peninsula and off the west coast of Otago. The northern depression has intensified while nearing New Zealand and is now moving towards the Cook Strait area. As a consequence north-easterly winds had by this morning risen to gale force in the far north. Yesterday's weather, though fair, was cloudy for the most part, and isolated local rains were reported. Since last night it has become thick and misty generally and rain is falling in most districts. Auckland's weather yesterday was fair, warm, and cloudy, with a northeasterly breeze. Some light rain fell last night, and at 9 a.m. today it was raining with a strong wind from the north-east. Wellington, too, had warm and fair weather, although it was cloudy to overcast at times. The hours of bright sunshine totalled 7.2. A moderate northerly wind prevailed. It was dull, misty, and calm this morning. Light rain commenced to fall about 8.30 a.m. and became heavier after midday. Christchurch had dull and warm weather with a fresh easterly wind. In Dunedin the weather has continued to be dull and misty. A drizzling rain, totalling three points, fell at times yesterday, the wind being a light to moderate one from the north or north-east.
