THE POPE'S ILLNESS
REPORTS MORE REASSURING SEQUEL TO BAD NIGHT (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) VATICAN CITY, January 3. The Pope became worse after a restless night, but later reports are more reassuring, owing !o a successful .slight operation. His' heart is standing the strain well. Thousands of letters and telegrams are arriving daily expressing hopes I for his recovery. The British Minister conveyed King George's sympathy and wishes for a speedy recovery. The President of France, M. Lcbrun, sent a similar message. Previously a communique by Dr. Milani stated that a slight improvement in the Pope's condition was noted after the application of leeches, which were removed on Saturday morning. His Holiness had a fair night, sleeping intermittently.
NOURISHMENT REFUSED LONDON, January 1. ' The Vatican City correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" states that the Pope refused all nourishment on Friday and is depressed after several bad nights due to the pain in his left leg, in which phlebitis is causing anxiety. It is feared that interruption to the circulation will cause mortification. The Rome correspondent of the "News Chronicle" says that the Pope's relatives, including his favourite nephew, who hurried from Milan, visited him in the afternoon, after which his Holiness drifted into semiconsciousness for the first time since his illness began. He has lost interest in the affairs of the State. ANOTHER SPECIALIST TO BE CONSULTED (Received January 4, 10 a.m.) VATICAN CITY, January 3. The Pope has agreed to Dr. Milani consulting a specialist. A message last week reported that the Pope declined a suggestion that Dr. Milani consult another specialist.
