WEATHER AND HOLIDAYS

Uncertainties in the Weather probably mean more to holiday makers than they used to do because of the growth of the out-of-door habit. It makes all the difference in the world in motor touring and camping, for instance, whether the days are wet or fine. New Zealand weather at its best, with the New Zealand beaches or countryside, is ideal for camping, but lent life in the rain is depressing. This holiday season, on the whole, lias had more than its share of wet weather, with one or two brilliant intervals just to tantalise the holiday maker. For both Christmas Day and New Year's Day to be wet, as they were in most parts of the Dominion, must be a rare conjunction of ill luck for those who spend their holidays out of doors, but there were compensations in the better days that followed in some favoured spots at any rate. The shadow of the infantile paralysis epidemic no doubt contributed to the spirit of restraint in travel at a time when otherwise record results might have been expected. The enthusiastic racegoer, however, does not seem to have been deterred from his favourite sport, for the totalisator returns show a large increase over the same period last year. One satisfactory feature; at the New Year has been the absence of the formidable list of motor accidents which characterised the opening of the holiday season. It would be unsafe to draw rigid conclusions either way, but the community will be thankful for the relief.
