FAVOURITE'S NEAR CALL

It there was anything in form Export should have been the best of good things, ps the public believed, for the Russell Hack Handicap. He beat Esse?: at Otaki, and Essex had won the Great Northern Derby on New Year's Day; and he himself had come from well back by a wide route to be a close second to Joyous over a furlong

less on the first day. He actually did materialise, but he should have been beaten by Lord Quick. The start practically decided the race in Export's favour. Most of the riders appeared to think it was a false start, and the last horsemen to get their mounts going were those on Southern Blood and Lord Quick. Export's rider was first to decide on going, and he was soon bowling along well clear of a strung-out field, headed by Toorak and Nectar. Lord Quick went up very fast on the stretch down to the straight entrance, and then in ihe run to the post he pushed the favourite to. less than half a head. A dead host might well have been given. Export was possibly not suited altogether by being asked to win from end to end, but it certainly looked as if Lord Quick was very unlucky. Export is nevertheless racing in good form rl present, and is likely to win ngain b?fore long. Lord Quick, victor over Alloa and Rotoma at Masterton in the spring, is a promising three-year-old colt by Lord Qucx carrying the same colours as Helen Ford. Southern Blood, several lengths back third, was also unfortunate in the start and he is due for a maiden win. Sansfoy, fourth, appears to be coming to hand again. Toorak seemed disappointing. but he might not have had all the best of the luck.
