VERY POPULAR SUCCESS
Hazoors stylish victory in the President's Handicap was one of the most popular at the meeting. This trim black son of the Derby winner Black Ronald is a favourite at Tauheremkau, where his breeder-owner, Mr. W. Howard Booth, is one of the stewards. Earlier in his carecr he won the open double there in the autumn, but the Wairarapa Cup, which Mr. Booth has yet to win, has so far eluded him. In the Cup on Friday Hazoor proved decidedly too good for everything except Tiger Gain, and with Tiger Gain out of the way and the benefit of that race it was little wonder that he was backed down to a short price on Saturday. He was placed nicely to win all the way. never far from the front though with only Terry behind him. and after avoiding some, trouble caused bv Hatuma's stopping quickly at the three furlongs because he was outside the horses on the rail, he came on smoothly from third at the straight to beat Boomerang comfortably by nearly a length. Hazoor, with the New Zealand Cup in view, was unlucky in suffering a bruised heel during his first two spring engagements, and he had to miss the-big two-miler for the second successive year after having finished fourth at his first attempt. Now seven years old, he might still win the New Zealand Cup. That is Mr. Booth's racing ambition. Boomerang ran a better race than on the first day, when he was disappointing, and he is overdue for a turn of luck. On this showing he may be a Cup winner at provincial meetings during the next few months. Top Notch, after taking charge at the three furlongs, hung on for third two lengths away. Orac, unlucky on the turn to be immediately behind Hatuma, was finishing on again right up fourth, but it is doubtful if he
would have troubled Hazoor. Friesland. whom Hazoor kept inside of him most of the way, was even more unfortunate in the Hatuma incident. Terry simply was not good enough to accept a chance.
