DIAMOND CUTTER'S FIRST

Well due for his first win. Diamond Cutter improved on his first day's effort to win the Pirinoa Stakes readily from the favourite, Southern Blood. The pair attended Beagle and The Pawnbroker to the straight, and though the Trentham horse then got up on the inner of the leaders Diamond Cutter finished too well for a shortlength decision. Ever since he made his first appear-1 ance at Masterton in October, Diamond Cutter has looked certain to break his maiden status at an early date, but he had to pass through a period of mixed luck before doing so. He is a good-looking three-year-old chestnut colt by Lackham from the Bisogne— Musical Moment mare Royal Queen, a half-sister to Tupurangi. Maestro, Royai King, etc., and he is being raced on lease by Mr. H. J. Harman, of Lower Hutt, whose colours Gay Court formerly carried. He is trained on the course by J. D. Lambess.

Southern Blood ran probably his best race yet, but again he had to be satisfied with a minor placing. It was his first appearance during the holidays. Gay Artist, a grey three-year-old daughter of Royal Picture and having her first start, finished strongly from well back into third. Beagle and The Pawnbroker tired, and Lustral is still racing greenly. Trimden was never in the serious running after not too r«od an early passage, and Lufra lost her chance at the start. Teastream ran a fair race among the others.
