TRANS-TASMAN RECORD

AW ATE A'S FAST PASSAGE

Once again the trans-Tasman liner Awatea, which entered the service in September, has succeeded in breaking her own record for the run between Sydney and Wellington, for when she arrived here this morning had reduced her previous best time, set up in her last crossing, by over an hour. The crossing, which was accomplished at the remarkably high average of 21.62 knots, reduced the record from 2 days 10 hours 22 minutes to 2 days 9 hours 15 minutes, a reduction of 1 hour 7 minutes. When she did the previous fastest time the Awatea s speed was 21.21 knots. She arrived at Wellington on Decmber 28 on that occaThe Awatea has been a considerable time out of dock, and consequently has not had her hull cleaned, so that her performance on the latest crossing was „even more remarkable. She is not yet folly run in, and it will still be some time before she approaches her designed cruising speed of 23 knots. On October 12 the Awatea arrived at Wellington after having broken the record held by the Monowai by a substantial margin. The Monowais time, had been 2 days 15 hours 10 minutes and this the Awatea reduced to 21 days 12 hours 33 minutes, subsequently further lowering the record to 2 days 11 hours 13 minutes, this time being corded on two consecutive trips.
