RACES AT PETONE

ROUGH SEA CONDITIONS

Sea conditions were unsuitable for rowing in Wellington on Saturday, but at Petone, where there is a certain amount of shelter from a northerly, the local club staged some sculling events. The sea was rather rough, but there was a good contest in.the final of the senior pairs over a. three-quar-ters of a mile course. In this event Leopard and Carter beat Abbott and Crane by two lengths. The senior and junior fours, which attracted considerable interest, was won by two lengths £, yAC]a,yto„n (str)- H- Te Puni (3)7 A. Pritchard (2), and J. Boswell (bow., from Mcßride (str), Howe (3), C Barraclough (2), and G. Leopard ibPV- ? he third crew was Crane (str), Watson (3), W. Lind (2), and G. Earney (bcw). The contest was very willing for half the -journey, after which Clayton increased his stroke to win comfortably. - , The Star Club conducted whale-boat races over a quarter-mile course, and there were some close arid interesting finishes. In the first heat Peter's crew beat Kidd's crew, J. Thodey's crew beat Cooke s, and Andrews beat Hosking. Webb's crew had a bye. In the second heat Peters beat Webb and Andrews beat Thodey. In the final Andrews (str), Sudford (4), Hughes (3), Hawker (2), and Sladden (bow), beat Peters (str), Clay (4), Hall (3), Donnelly (2), and Dawson (bow). I
