WIN FOR UNIVERSITY

Largely owing to a fine last-wicket stand by Stevens and McMillan, University scored a win over Wellington on the first innings in their match at Kelburn Park. Wellington made a gallant effort to force an outright win, but the-clock was against/them. Ori tho-'£rst day's play Wellington put on

146 runs, and University replied with 52 runs for the loss of four wickets at .stumps. Harding and Harpur resumed for University at the commencement of the second day's play, but the former did not last long. Harpur was responsible for a handy 22, and it looked as though the team would fall short of Wellington's total when seven Wickets were down for 93 runs. McMillan and Stevens, however, gave a sterling exhibition and both scored freely. Stevens gave One chance. It was not until the total had reached 167 that, McMillan was. bowled by Meech. At the conclusion of the innings McMillan had scored 31 runs while Stevens was 30 not out—a fine effort, 'considering that Stevens was shaking off a severe cold. Good scores by Lowry, Foley, and Ell were features of Wellington's second innings, which was declared closed when the total stood at 167 for seven wickets. Thomas, who opened with Foley, went early, bowled by Tricklebank, but the partnership by Lowry and Foley was effective, and realised 72 runs. Good fielding by University prevented the batsmen from taking many risks. Lowry's total was 45 and Foley's 33, while Ell, who came in later, was one of the not-out batsmen, his score standing.at 52 when the innings closed. Harding and Harpur opened for University in their second innings, but Harding was caught after he had made 2. Wiren, McMillan, and Wilson also went cheaply, but Tricklebank put up a good showing, his score of 23 being the highest of the innings. _ When stumps were drawn University had made 116 for the loss of eight wickets.
