The fears of war between China and Japan are intensified. The Nanking Government • has reported tliat it is mobilising a force of over 70,000 soldiers to guard the Nanking-Hangkow-Shanghai rail system.
Japanese marines have virtually occupied Hongkew. . The British naval authorities are preparing to evacuata British women and children from the Yangtze ports in the event of emer* gency.
The possibility of a Japanese block* ade of the Yangtze ports' is feared.
The serious impasse in the negotiations between China and Japan and the firmness of China towards the Japanese demands have .thrown Japanese diplomatic quarters into consternation, and they are now pessimistic of success in the negotiations.
The exodus of Chinese from Hong" kew and Chapei has been renewed.
The passing of the death sentence on two Chinese on a charge of shooting a Japanese marine at Hongkew in November, 1935, has caused satisfaction in Japanese circles, but has not lessened the tension. The Japanese Consul at Changsha, ■alleging that tha Chinese police are hushing up an al» leged attempt to blow up his residence, is protesting to the Hunan Government. . '
