FANCY DRESS DANCE

The committee and staff of the Eastern Hutt School organised an evening fancy-dress dance for the pupils at the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt. The hall presented a colourful display, with the costumed children taking part in marches and in group dances while some hundreds of parents and friends watched the entertainment.' In the official party were the Mayoress (Mrs. J. W. Andrews), Mr. Dyer (chairman of the Wellington Education Board) and Mrs. Dyer, the headmaster (Mr. Benson) and Mrs. Benson, Mr. W. F. Bond (chairman of the school committee) and Mrs. Bond, Mr. and Mrs. Hooson, Mr. and Mrs. Dudding, Mrs. Balls, and Mrs. Thompson. Present also were the members of the committee, Mr. and Mrs. Flux, Mr. and Mrs. Grant-Taylor, Mr., and Mrs. Pool, Mr; and Mrs. Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley, Mr. and Mrs. Gillies, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Webster. Organising the children's items were members of .the teaching staff: Mrs. Baillie, the Misses Duff, Ferris, O'Donnell, Feist, Barry, Cairns, and Messrs. J. Bell, Bragg, and Wilkinson. They were assisted by Mesdames Carter and Harland. The programme, which opened with grand parades of the upper and lower classes, comprised folk dances and action songs executed by the smaller children, and ballroom dances by the upper grades. Some striking costumes were worn by Tom Grant-Taylor (Chinese mandarin), Ruth Andrews (Early Victorian), Latham Andrews (Hindu), Anthony Reid (Knave of Hearts), D. and P. Grant-Taylor (Fairies), Ray Russell (Gipsy), J. Nicholl (Hawaiian), Stan Wesley (Mexican), Judith Collins (Iceland Poppy), Murray Hooson (Cowboy), Valeric Bird (Island Girl), Pat Barclay (Indian Princess), Grant Thompson (Grenadier), Joan Clark (Spanish Dancer), Joyce feist (Prince Charming), Laura McDonald (Medieval Lady), Shirley Davidson (Bedtime Story), Alan Wetherall (Rat), H. Poole (Scout), C. Mason and L. Boland (Pierrots), Daphne Davidson (Gipsy), R. Sutherland (Popeye), B. Mouat (Cowboy), L. Carroll (Dutch Boy), G. A very enjoyable afternoon wasspent at the home of Mr. G, H. Mackley in Glen Iris Avenue, Lower Hutt, when Mrs. Mackley entertained a number of friends at afternoon tea. The occasion was to bid farewell to Mrs. Gostelow, who is leaving Lower Hutt for Australia. Among the guests invited to wish her. "good-bye" were Mrs. Hough, Mrs. and Miss Feist, Mrs. Doyle, and Mrs. Jones. Bridge Afternoon. The committee for the Residential Nursery conducted a pleasant and successful card afternoon for the Nursery's funds at the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt. The ladies present included Mesdames Flux, Forbes, August (senior), Brodie, Haden, Gunn, Warburton, Edwards, Peck, Keys, R. Smith, Wells, Drummond, Dodgson, Lonsdale, Doyle, W. Chartres, Grimwood, VV. Smith, Rowe, Passmore, Corlett, L. Boyd, O. Dormer, W. Ross, L. M. Rankin, Alexander, Sutcliffe, Monks, Jones, Hay, Moginie, Shearer, Savage, Campbell, C. Whitcher, Vaughan, Mayer, Miller, Williams, Martin, Hutcheson, F. Martin, Roberts, Armstrong, Gill, Pool, Dennis, Wright, Burrell, King, Brooks, Bond, Balis, Beasley, Craven, Dwyer, R. Y. Collins, A. The bridge trophy was won by Mrs. Martin. , Members of ' the committee supplied a dainty home-made tea for the players.
