HON. A. F. HAWKE
Advice from InvercargiU records the death of the Hon. Archibald Fotheringham Hawke, a former member of the Legislative Council from 1918 to 1932. Mr. Ha\vke \yas born in South Australia in. 1862, and coming to New Zealand practically • all his life was spent in InvercargiU, where he was prominent for the interest he took in public affairs. He started as a junior with the National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., and after serving with the firm in Christchurch and Dunedin he returned to Invercargill in 1890 as manager. Mr. Hawke was keenly interested in sport to his younger days, and took an active part on the administration side. He was president of the Southland Rugby Union on several occasions, and was president of the New Zealand Rugby Union in its second year. He was Mayor of the Sorough of Gladstone for some time, and when that borough amalgamated with the Invercargill Borough Council he became a member of that body. He \vas chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board.for three years, and chairman of the Hospital Board for more than fifteen years, besides which he was president of the Southland A. and P. Association and of the Chamber of Commerce, and was also a member of the High School Board and the Electric Power Board.
