He was president of the Southland Rugby Union on several occasions, and was president of the New Zealand Rugby Union in its second year. He was Mayor of the Sorough of Gladstone for some time, and when that borough amalgamated with the Invercargill Borough Council he became a member of that body. He \vas chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board.for three years, and chairman of the Hospital Board for more than fifteen years, besides which he was president of the Southland A. and P. Association and of the Chamber of Commerce, and was also a member of the High School Board and the Electric Power Board.
