BOARD OF CONTROL

At this week's meeting of the Wellington Rugby League Board of Control Messrs. V. Simpson (chairman), E. Dale, E. Buckland, W. Holland, E. Elliott, L. Benseman, F. Wisnesky, and G. OXeary were present. In declaring the season officially closed Mr.\V, Simpson stated that the board regretted having to cancel fixtures, but with the closing of Newlown Park for the approaching cricket soason no-other' Course, could be adoptee.. Congratulations were extended to the Pe'one reserve grade team on complete ing a splendid "treble" in winning the grade premiership, the Buckland Cup, and the knock-out competition. ■ .. ' In view of the situation regarding the early closing of Newtown Park it was decided that representative fixtures next season be arranged earlier than had been the case this year. A special "challenge issued by Petone to play St. George in, a McEwan testimonial match was received and held over at the last meeting of the board •ending ground arrangements. The -ecretary reported that as the Rushy Union lease of the. Petone Recreation Ground did not expire until the end 'of the month the proposed fixture would have to be cancelled.

Arising out of an accident on Raroa Road on August 2 in which an elderly man, who was trying to avoid three cyclists, was struck by a motor-car, Douglas John Smith was charged before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday with driving in a dangerous manner. SubInspector Roach prosecuted, and My. J. F. B. Stevenson appeared for thn deiendant. After hearing the evidence Mr. Stilwell. without, calling on the defendant, said that the evidence about the spaed oC the car was uncertain arid the defendant had such a short time in which to avoid the pedestrian that a case for dangerous driving was not established. The. prosecution was dismissed.
