PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting, of the Petone Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, the Mayor (Mr. A. Scholefleld) presiding. The Hutt Valley V.M.C.A. was granted permission to, hold a street day on October 2. Permission was also granted to the Petone Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club to use the Recreation Ground on the afternoon of October 17 on the occasion of the annual Palmerston North-Petone road race. The Petone Rugby Football Club was asked to arrange a deputation to wait on the works_ committee regarding a new gymnasium. The treasurer's financial statement showed the borough's position to be satisfactory. The action of the Mayor "in defending the good name of Petone overseas' received the hearty support of the meeting. . The meeting unanimously decided,: on the motion of Councillor Edwards, to approach the Postmaster-General regarding the reduction of telephone charges between the city and Petone.

Silver jubilee celebration of Alexandra Day brought a collection in London and Greater London of about £51,000, which is nearly £10,000 up on last year.
