DUTCH FAIR

THE CHARM OF POPPIES

Patience, and the exercise of many clever fingers have contributed a great deal to the charm of the Dutch Fair now going on at the Town Hall in aid of the funds of St. Peter's Mission. The decorations of poppies are admirable. They are there in all tones of colour, in bunches, in trails, and artistically scattered, making one of the most charming schemes imaginable. The addition of great numbers of coloured balloons and bright streamers makes the rather dull hall a most attractive place.

Added to the general appearance the stalls are also well supplied. Two specialties may be mentioned always at the Mission Fairs—needlework and produce. The stalls which deal with needlework of various kinds are very well stocked with dainty, artistic articles, some for adult or children's wear, and some suitable for Christmas gifts. There are many well-made "prettinesses" to be selected from, those who buy having a double pleasure, in buying well for their Christ-

mas gifts, and in helping the fair along, to the benefit of many needy people. The produce stalls, with calces and scones and other good eatables.and in another direction/With :piclrlcS;" l;jams, sauces, etc., are as weir laden; and those who have not the requisite time or skill to make these good things can be sure that all they buy is home-made in reality and not merely in "reputation." There are flowers (cut and to plant), special "woollies" for children, a."cookery nook," where.interesting demonstrations, are given,; and ..a very entrancing stall'with "mysfery .parcels"—these being of. all sizes and shapes, which should attract the adventurous. Tea,, cool drinks, ice cream, etc., are all to be obtained, and the side-shows are a good feature. Homemade sweets are always acceptable. In all the fair presents a large number of attractions. •

The bridge party going _on this afternoon is a special attraction.

Tonight the General Motors Concert Party and the band of the Ist Battalion Wellington Regiment will give excellent entertainment, while the demonstration of cookery by the home science department of the Gas Company will have a special thrill for those who think seriously about the necessity for making the best of the materials at the. command of the housewife. ■■.■..■

Tomorrow a baby show will be held in the afternoon, and Mrs. McVicar, who has managed so many of these successfully, will be in charge. There will also be another cookery demonstration, so the women are being very usefully and happily catered for, and no doubt the attendance will be commensurate with the attractions.^ - • ■ '■
