"HORSES FOR COURSES"

CASE OF ROYAL PALM

Royal Palm, Saturday's record dividend payer at Hutt Park, had been successful previously on the course, and quite a few people who attach credence to the "horses for courses' adage did so to their profit and "very good content" when the Railway Handicap came up for consideration. Royal Palm has not shown form in the same street as some of the younger horses such as Ginger Jack, Ace Pot, Lucky Jack, Ideal, and Baron Grand, but it was still surprising to find one of his average ability and breeding at such a forlorn price. The mix-up at the start made him a present of the race, but the manner in which,he maintained his lead indicated that he would have been a difficult horse to beat in any circumstances. He is by Silk Thread, a pacer who won good handicaps for Mr. J. R. McKenzie, and his dam is imported Nulgeria, by Bon Cres—Miss Nutonia, the dam of a great pacer in Mabei Trask, 2min l?sec, >vho was described by an American writer as one of the most beautiful mares ever seen on- the Grand Circuit. Nulgeria, who is still at the "Roydon Lodge" Stud, has produced a good trotter in Don Chenault, and another winning pacer in Dual, who won her first race at Hutt Park last season.
