PRODUCE IN LONDON.
The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated September 12, 1936, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, Lon°TalTow: Market quiet. Moderate business has been done in mutton, fine, on spot at slightly easier prices. Hemp: Manila—Market strong with improved demand; prices have advanced. September-November shipment sold,up to £26 10s. Sisal-Mar-ket firm and steady; September-Novem-ber shipment sold £27; DecemberMarch shipment £27 ss. New Zealand —Market quiet; nominally unchanged; no first-hand sales, reported. Fruit: Final stocks cleared at late rates. Season has been very unsatisfactory with demand for apples weak out of proportion to supplies since November with prices declining consistently over.last three months. Pears have been somewhat better. Trade nonDlussed to account for consistent weakness in apple market, but combination of circumstances, ■ including Coronation, induce them to be more optimistic regarding new season. Eggs: Market firm but trade slow on account of higher prices. English, national pack, 13s to ,18s 6d; ordinary pack, 15s to 16s; Danish, 10s 7id t? 13s 3d.
The Argentine. has j ust expe-nenced a disastrous potato crop failure. Even the product which is more or less in marketable condition is of very poor quality and the crop considered generally is not very far from being a total loss. Retail prices have soared accordingly and the Chamber of Deputies has voted a large grant for the oversea purchase of a fresh stock . of seed potatoes.
