NEGLECTED DOG
A FINE IMPOSED
For omitting to supply a female setter dog with proper and sufficient food, water, and shelter, James William Stewart, a fireman, was fined £2 10s and-costs by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon. The information was laid by the inspector of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Mr. R. A. Nicol, for whom Mr. T. P. McCarthy, appeared.
Evidence was given by Mr. Nicol that the dog had been kept in an insanitary state and was so hungry on one occasion that when released it ran to the water sump and tried to lick the grease. Two residents of Rolleston Street said that they had fed the dog and that it was ferociously hungry.
Stewart, giving evidence on his own behalf, said that he did not have charge of the dog, which had refused to sleep in the kennel provided. He denied that the dog was short of food, and said that he thought one of the residents of Rolleston Street was looking after it.
Mr. Stilwell said he was satisfied that the dog had been neglected and that it was the defendant's duty as owner to look after it properly.
