EMPIRE DAY

Aix-les-Bains is-the only town outside the British Empire where Empire Day is commemorated annually. The town was visited several times by Queen Victoria, and her monument is the centre for the celebrations.

This year, in advance, the High Commissioner presented a New Zealand ensign to the town, and the flag, together with those of the other Dominions and colonies, "flying around the monument of the Great and Glorious Queen Victoria, produced the best impression on all English and French people who were present."

The words are those of the Mayor of Aix-les-Bains, who wrote after- the event that there was, because of the gift of those flags, "a greater celebration than before of Franco-BritisJ friendship."
