ORIENTAL BAY PAVILION

With the near approach of the calling of tenders for the new city bathing pavilion in Oriental Bay, a work which in all has been estimated to cost some £6000, the question of tenure of the spot has naturally come to thefore. The new pavilion is expected to last for a number of years and may be still in excellent order in half a ceh,tury. It is felt by the City Council that the existing tenure could with advantage be more ■ stabilised.; The present occupation is by a foreshore licence granted by the Harbour Board for 14 years, which is1 the limit under legislation governing harbour leases. The area on which the pavilion is to be built was given for the band rotunda, and there are still two years to run of the second fourteen years for which the licence was renewed by the board. The question of freehold being granted does not arise. It was never asked for by the City Council in connection with the proposed new pavilion. The council would like more definite rights than those conferred by a foreshore licence, and the Harbour Board has been asked to consider ways of ■ meeting this desire. . ■
