An interesting feature of the recent English Derby is that the Aga Khan's two colts who finishedfirst and second Mahmoud and Taj Akbar, were the smallest horses, measured by height, in the whole field. Taj Akbar was actually the -"baby," measuring 15 hands 24 inches, and Mahmoud is a quarter ■^"o 1"0^ taller. sharing this height with Squadron Castle. The tallest colt was Thankerton, who finished third and who is 16 hands 2J- inches Despite their height, however, Mahmoud and Taj Akbar have larger other measurements than many of their rivals. In girth Mahmoud is 69 inches and Taj Akbar 69J inches, while one of the colts in the field (Magnet) is only 66 inches in girth. Mahmoud"s length of rein is 45 : inches and Taj Akbar's 42 inches, Mahmoud's measurement being about- the average. Both colts have eight inches of bone below the knee, the largest measurement in this item' having been Bel Acthol's 3£ .inches.
