WELLINGTON MEETING

STATISTICAL REVIEW

TAXATION PAYMENTS

(By "Rangatira.V)

Success has again attended th.j policy of the Wellington Racing Club in increasing its stakes, for the Winter Meeting held last week was the best jumping fixture since 1930—indeed it was probably the outstanding' meeting since the days before the depression. The improvement in stakes offering was £-900, over twice the increase made two years ago,.and the club easily covered this.with its increase in totalisator investments, which.were up about 27J per cent, on the three days, compared with just under.2s per cent, last year, a substantial/betterment oh increasing aggregates. The weather was undoubtedly a considerable factor, in the success of the meeting, but to it alone the great improvement cannot be wholly attributed, for last year the. weather was the best the club had enjoyed in July, for many years. The crowds that attended Trentham last week may well be a sign that the mild boom: recently enjoyed in the Auckland district has now reached the southern end of the North Island. With the new Julius totalisator to be installed before the next meeting the immediate future prosperity of Trentham appears to be well assured. Last week there was a substantial improvement in each day's turnover. The total of £133,058 10s for the meeting not only well exceeded the £177,766 handled at the Cup.Meeting last January, but it was also the best at a Winter Meeting since 1930, when £140,755 was invested. The figures for Saturday, £59,795 10s, were a record since the final day in 1928, when £68,978 was handled, and the 1928 amount was the peak for several years. The lowest point in the intervening years was reached in 1933, when only £26,662 10s went through the machine on the Saturday. ; - Despite its present rebate of 1 per cent, on the totalisator tax, and the recent reduction of the stakes tax from 5 to 1 per cent., the Government benefits more financially from the recent meeting than it has for well over a decade, for until 1931 the totalisator tax was only half its present statutory percentage.' The sum for which the club has become liable in : taxation (without amusement tax, the amount of which will hot be ascertainable for several days) is made up approximate! ly as follows, the figures for 1931 (aftei the doubling of the totalisator tax) and also for the last two years, being appended for purpose of comparison-— J9SI IDS - \ID3S-. in:;(j nw c ttax "••■ ?>SSI '- ™'lv- ■iin.i/. rJa Totals .... - TGSiV; r-709!4\sp«. n,214 The amounts are calculated to the nearest ten shillings.
