A GAUGUIN PICTURE

One of the most famous and largest pictures painted by Paul Gauguin, the French artist who died in 1903, at the age of 55, has. been bought by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts for a sum stated to exceed £10,000.

Gauguin painted the picture in 1897 when living in Tahiti. It is 12ft long by 4Jft. wide. He gave it the title, in French, "Whence come we? What are we? Whither go we?"

It was Gauguin's intention that the picture should be his last. When he had finished it he attempted to commit suicide but recovered. The Boston Museum, outbidding other American galleries, bought it from the art firm of Marie Harriman, which purchased it from the Stang collection at Oslo,
