LOST TO LABOUR
MR. J. H. THOMAS'S SEAT
LONDON, July 9. The Derby by-election, necessitated by Mr. J. H. Thomas's resignation, resulted: — P. J. Noel Baker (Labour) .. ,28,419 Major A. G. : Church (National. [ Labour) 25,666 Labour thus gains the seat.
Derby has two representatives. , At the General Election last year Mr. W. A. Reid (Conservative) and Mr. J. H. Thomas (National Labour) were returned with 37,707 and 37,566 votes respectively, Mr. H. A. Hind (Labour) securing 25,037 votes and Mr. L J. Barnes (Labour) 24,594.
Mr. P; J. Noel Baker is one of the most prominent of intellectuals in the Labour Party and in the second MacDonald Government he held the post of Parliamentary Secretary to the Secretary for Foreign Affairs. He had a brilliant record at Cambridge University and served in the war, doing ambulance work and being twice decorated. From 1924 to 1929 he held a chair ill International Relations at London University, and' his books on disarmament are among the best-known works on that, subject.
