THORNDON RAMP
MAKARA'S CONTRIBUTION OBJECTION BY HUTT COUNTY The Makara County will contribute £170 16s towards the £11,000 local authorities' contribution to the construction of the Waterloo Quay overbridge—the "Thorndon ramp"—this share having been computed on a population basis. A decision to this effect was reached at a meeting of the Makara County Council today. The chairman (Mr. R. G. Mcxteci) said the amount was considerably smaller than when the proposition was first brought forward. r rhe original assessment had been made on the full population and the county had been asked to contribute £300. It had been suggested that payment should be made on the basis of contribution to the Hutt Road fund, which would have meant that Makara would have had to find more than £1000, which showed the iniquity of the county's contribution to the Hutt Road. That suggestion, however, had been dropped.
Councillor E. Windlcy said it was unfortunate that the Hutt County Council was objecting. If all the bodies concerned objected it would mean the setting-up of a commission—it was a pity that only one body stood out. The chairman said the Hutt County Council was objecting on a matter of principle, the same principle that Makara had balked at, but conceded.
