BRITISH PAINTINGS
Advice has been received by Mr. F. H. Bass, secretary, to the board of trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum, that the collection of paintings being loaned by the National Gallery and Tate Gallery, London, for the opening of the new gallery in Wellington is due to arrive in New Zealand next Monday. Just what these paintings will be no one knows exactly. Tentative lists of works have been received, but what selection was finally made by the loan committee in London will not be known until the papers arrive. These may be coming forward in the same steamer as the paintings. A hanging committee has already been appointed, Messrs. Sydney Thompson, Nelson Isaac, and Nugent j Welch, and they are already engaged on the work of hanging some of the permanent and academy pictures. The main gallery, in the front of the building, is being reserved for the English loan collection.
