RAGING AND TROTTING

BLUE BOY'S HURDLES THE HAWKE'S BAY MEETING FORMS WORKS OUT POORLY (By Telegraph) (Special to tho "Evening Post.") HASTINGS, June 11. The opening day of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting saw racing at a low ebb. The fields in five of the seven events were very small, and thus interest was greatly diminished, causing the public to curtail speculation. Despite this, however, the day showed a. small increase in turnowr; tho £4317 10s handled comparing with £4183 on the first day last year, Had the fields been near average strength the investments must have been-well up. The weather was cold, with occasional light showers. The going was soft Under all the circumstances the attendance was quite satisfactory. The racing was interesting, but favourites did not fare too well, the public having to wait till the final event, contested by four horses, before seeing their flrdt fancy come home first. Three other favourites paid second dividends. favourite badly left. . The Maiden Plate field was very poorly "dispatched,/and the favourite, Lucuilua. Lad. was so badly lelt from an outside marble that he was immediately robbed of any winning chance. Trailer, the winner, was always in the picture and finished on solidly. He impressed as likely to improve further with the race. Le Toquet and 'Silver Tide, the place-getters, were always near the lead and they had every ; chance in comparison with most of the others, the nearest of whom at the close were Master Hector, First Hand, and Count Siegfried. As a guide to immediate events this race cannot be accepted as too reliable, at least outside the ■winner's performance. IMPRESSIVE EXHIBITION. Blue Boy gave an impressive display of jumping and stamina in winning the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, being in front practically all the way and outstaying all opposition in the run , home. Journet went fairly well, and - .he might have been closer had he not suffered interference in the straight. Manawatu ran most ungenerously, be-ing-tailed off twenty lengths over the first mile, though he then came with . a solid run at the finish for fourth. Emotion will profit considerably with the race, and next time will be in the firing line; , I UNINTERESTING AFFAIR. • ■ The amateur riders' race, the Corinthian Plate, was most uninteresfr- . ing,', excepting the finish, when Sunny Sky Nearly caught Tile Gras- . .per's rider napping. They v were a very poor lot. F IN STEEPLECHASE. The June Steeples was not a very enterprising event, as Beau Star fell at the initial obstacle, and then Cotsfield, who held a commanding lead, tipped out at the post-and-rails. This left the four Others bunched, and from then on they took turns at piloting the - field. Half a mile from home the quar•tct were still together, and so they turned for home. At the end Dozio outstayed Monarchy and Strome, with . Kaokaoroa's condition giving completely out. Dozie was well ridden, which helped materially in her win. Monarchy hung out all the way, causing . him to cover much extra ground. Strome, for.d novice, went a very fine • race, but hesitating at many of his iumps lost him a lot of ground. When he Improves in this department, he will account for better-class horses than finished ahead of him today, more especially as; he possesses the necessary staminas to win over a long Course. WINNER HANDLED BEST. . 'The Winter Handicap, with only four runners, was another event to cause little interest, Stitchbird, ably handled, •easily accounted for the poor opposition. Contract and Sunder had . every chance, but failed to weigh up to a very low grade. GRANVALE SUITED. Granvale Won the Clifton Hack ■ Handicap solely because he could handle the winter weights, whereas the majority of the others appeared to bis hampered by their burdens. Quite a few of the fancied candidates ran below anticipations, and the form on Saturday may work out altogether . different Hunters Morn is one that • ' inay Improve, the same applying to Blue Garter, First Chapter, andMata • Hari, although the last-named is hardly up. to the weight she has now to be allotted. In this race once again the - brilliant track galloper Joviality failed • to reproduce his best, but excuse may ; Be offered, for him, as he got the worst ' of the start. In all the flat raccs the starting was below country form. A FAVOURITE AT LAST. Again in the last race, the Herc- . taunga Handicap, only four went to the ■ post, making it the third of the day which was responsible for Small speculation. Quake tried to win. all the way, but the pronounced favourite Passion Flower, with only three pounds - above the minimum, was too hot an order and comfortably beat her at the finish. Big Dook was last most of the way, but over the last furlong came with a great rattle to cut out Lavina for third.. This gelding is in great order for middle-distance events at Wanganui next week. * RESULTS IN DETAIL. He has not yet had a great deal of racing, his starts to date not yet numbering double figures. Trailer is one of the first crop of the Tractors in the North Island. A four-year-old chestnut gelding, he is a son of the Absurd —Hine Pango mare Hine Hohoro, who was a winner some years back but was a disappointing galloper on the whole, and he is owned by his breeder, Mr. G. Priest, who also raced Hine Hohoro. A full-sister to Hine Hohoro was Raukyra, dam of the surprise Otaki winner Warehi, and a three-quarter-sister to the .pair is Brown Pearl, who has recently won a number of events from the George stable.

IRISH COMET'S PROMISE

A very promising steeplechaser was seen out at the recent Auckland Meet ing in Irish Comet,': who "ran' set.end to in the Hunt Club Cup and also occupied the same position to Forest Glow in the Winter Steeplechase. He[ jumped well in both events, and his owner-trainer, R. Sexton, evidently had a good opinion of him, as he withdrew him from the Tamaki Steeplechase, a hack event, to run him in the Winter Steeplechase. Irish Comet is by Day Comet, who has ' produced many good jumpers, from Rape of the Lock, by Spalpeen (also a notable producer of good jumpers) from Gold Tress, by Nelson, a treble winner of the Auckland Cup. Irish Comet, though getting on in years, should win a good jumping event before his career is ended.

SISTERENA AS HURDLER

A number of horses with engagements during the next month, and probably later at the Wellington and C.J.C. Meetings, were schooled at Riccarton on Wednesday. Arctic Star- (J. Smith) and Courtyard (E. H&inbow), members of D. O'Connor's team, were sent over four hurdles, and, though the former gave the better exhibition, Courtyard also shaped Well • and showed superior speed on the flat. Both horses are in good order for the Dunedin Meeting. Sisterena (A. Stove) was also sent over four hurdles. The pace was not fast, but she gave a fine exhibition of jumping. She is due to race on the flat on the first and second days of the Dunedin Meeting, but she may have a race over;hurdles on the third day, as a preliminary to a more extended trial at Trentham next month.

The three-year-old Fiord is to be tried among the jumpers, and he gave a good showing in his initial effort over the pony hurdles. His stablemate, Solwit, with two hurdle wins_ to his credit, has started on his education as a steeplechaser, in which department he may have his first race at Oamaru at the end of this month. TURF NEWS IN BRIEF Dozie, winner of the June Steeples at Hastings yesterday, was winner of the same event last year. Acceptances for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter .Meeting, to be held on June 20 and 2?, close at 9 o'clock on Monday evening. Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting are due next Friday evening, on the eve of the Birthday meetings. As a result of his win at Otaki Chile Is now ineligible for hack races on the Hat. This means that his entry for flat events at Wanganui is void, as entry was made the day after he had won at Otaki. Chile is also out of hacks as a hurdler. According to a corrected report from the south, the Shambles —Brayton two-year-old who joined F. D. Jones's stable last week will race in the interests of Mrs. N. D. Campbell, of Moturau. Four North Island clubs —Napier Park, Wanganui, Otaki, and Wellington—are applying to the Racing Conference for the King'a Birthday date for next season. The Dunedin Jockey CJub will have no opposition so far as the South Island is concerned. Free Air, who is engaged at Dunedin next week, is at present under the care of E. Shaw at New Brighton, but she will shortly be transferring north to join up with her owner H. Rama's team again, now re-established at Ellerslie. R. Beale, who has returned south from Auckland, is at present giving his left shoulder a chance to become thoroughly strong again before he resumes race riding at the Dunedin Meeting at the end of tho week. Convivial, owned by Mr. M. M. Friedlander, of Waikari, is now being trained by P. McGrath at Riccartqn. This Lord Warden filly has always displayed galloping ability, and with ihe better facilities she will now get for working in company she should showj improvement,
