_ .♦_ N.Z. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP THE BLEDISLOE CUP This year's twenty-board telegraphic chess matches for the club championship of New Zealand were commenced on Saturday evening, the pairings being Auckland Chess Club v. Wellington Chess Club, and Otago Chess Club v Canterbury Chess dub (the present holders of the Bledisloe Cup). A prompt start was made with the form- : er fixture, each club having had a i working bee attending to preliminaries ■ during the afternoon. The arrange- - ments that are necessary for a match ' by telegraph were made at Welluig- ' ton by Messrs. Emery, Severne, Yar- '. rell, and W. White. Very fair progress ' was made at most of the boards, thanks ' to the good work of the umpires (Messrs. D. Wild in Wellington, and F. R. Jeffreys in Auckland), and the efficiency of the two operators, who > have had considerable previous experi- > ence of this special work (Messrs. W. 1 Kennedy, at Wellington, and F. Hai- : rison at Auckland). The accurate work k of the local tellers, Messrs. W. Dallas, 2 E. Gallichan (who was president of - the Ashhurst Chess Club in. the late i eighties), and G. Morpeth, was also •» very helpful, an entire absence of c clerical errors being a gratifying leae ture of the evening's play. The Wel- ! lington Club is not at full strength in f this match, but is fortunate in having '> several good reserves to draw upon. * The pairings, and openings used, a were as follows: — V _ .._. .. ...',., > n.,„,,i,„T

None of the games was flmshl' ed on Saturday evening, but several e - of them are well advanced. The posile tions reached at boards 5, 13, and 18 is appear to favour the local, club, and :r- .the other games are left in a very lv even state. Some fine and instructive finishes should be witnessed when the match is resumed and concluded on Saturday evening. The Wellington tpam is playing in its new clubroom on the fifth floor of the Gas Company s • Building. .
