AMERICAN SHIPPING
THE SUBSIDY SYSTEM
WOMEN'S SUPPORT URGED
WASHINGTON, January 17.
The Assistant Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Kermit Roosevelt, son of,ex-President Theodore Roosevelt, and now vice-president of United States Lines, addressing the board of directors of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, urged aggressive support by American women for the American merchant marine and direct subsidies, as proposed in pending legislation, to enable American shipping to compete with ocean commerce. •
Mr. Johnson stressed the necessity to "think concretely in terms of national defence as well as expansion of foreign trade."
Mr. Roosevelt said: "Not only are foreign construction and operating costs lower than those of .the United States, but other nations increase our disadvantage by giving immense subsidies to ships under their flags."
