AUSTRALIA'S NEEDS

LOCAL MANUFACTURE

PLANS DISCUSSED

United Tress Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received December 23, 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. It is reliably reported that the Commonwealth Government is considering the manufacture in Australia of fighting aircraft of the latest British design.

The Hon. Archdale Parkliill, Minister of Defence, recently indicated that the Commonwealth intended to develop all branches of the defence forces. He has, however, ascertained that British firms '■ are unable to give speedy delivery of Australian orders for fighting aircraft owing to rush orders from other countries. He is thus impressed, with the case for the manufacture in Australia of fighting aircraft, preferably by private aviation companies subsidised by the Government, which could set up the special organisation necessary for building both Government and commercial aircraft.
