OBITUARY
\ MR. J. W. SALMON
The death of Mr. Joseph William Salmon occurred yesterday at his residence,. 100 CoromandeF Street. ;
Born on April,6, iB6O, the late Mr. Salmon entered", the service of the Post and Telegraph Department in 1875 and on his-retirement on April 4, 19^7, after 42 years' service, he was postmaster of Wellington South; a position he had occupied for a number of years. He was, in 4he unique position of- having been a postmaster at the age of 16, at Charleston, on the West Coast. He opened the new post offlces^at Pderoa and other .places on the Coromandel •' Peninsula.
Since his retirement, Mr. Salmon interested himself in many activities in the community. He was parishioners' warden, at St. Thomas' Church, Newtown, and a vestryman 'for a number of years. F/>r twenty-five years'he had been a :meniber of the Anglican Synod, of which he was a member of the standing committee, and later of the schools committee.. For years he was Returning Officer for the electorate of Wellington Suburbs. Mr. Salmon was an active, arid popular member of the Newtown Bowling Club, and was the club's treasurer for some years. From, 1927 until;his death he was.also treasurer of the Wellington City. Mission Board ofvTrustees| He had been for years a member of the South School Commit-; teej and'when he-died he' was, its chairman^ For many years he was treasurer of the Wellington South .Horticultural, Society. He leaves a widow and a daughter, Miss - Elsie Salmon. ..'•'•
