QUARTERLY COUNCIL

MEETING

A quarterly council meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association was held at 64 Courtenay Place on December 2. Mr. A. T. Craven (Auckland) occupied the chair, and the following delegates were present:—Messrs J. C. McCrea (Hamilton), G. P. Anderson (Gisborne), R. G. Didsbury (Napier), F. K. Kelling (Rotorua and Southland), W. White (New Plymouth), A. E. Jessup (Wanganui), W. Kemble Welch (Palmerston North), G. A. Jones (Masterton), A. W. Gyles and R. C. Sim (Wellington CO, H. M. J. Cleland and J. Read (Otago). An apology was received from Mr. R. A. Godtschalk (Dannevirke). The chairman of the Wellington Chess League, Mr. J. I. Goldsmith, and the hon. secretary, Mr. H. N. Robie, were present by invitation. The correspondence on hand related mainly to the impending tour of the Dominion by Mr. Purdy, the Australian champion, and to the 45th tourney to decide the chess championship of New Zealand, which is to be held in Wellington during the Christmas holidays. Twenty entries were received for this contest, play in which is to commence on Boxing Day. At the previous meeting it was' decided, on the suggestion of Mr. Severne, to ask the affiliated clubs if they would agree to limit the championship entries' to 14 in the event of a minor tourney being added to the programme. The replie:; receiyed from the clubs indicated that a majority of. 'them favoured Mr. Severne's proposal. As the association has definitely decided to hold a minor tourney, and also a ladies' tourney, simultaneously with the main event, the twenty congress entries were referred to the association's elimination board, which has been enlarged and now consists of Messrs. A. W. Gyles, G. P.. Anderson, E. H. Severne, E. E. Hicks, and K. Beyer. As a result of the decisions reached by this" body after a careful examination of all the match records of recent years, the fourteen competitors will be Messrs. C. J. S. Purdy, of Sydney, N.S.W. (the champion of Australia), J. A. Erskine, the present New Zealand champion (Southland CO, J. B. Dunlop (Otago CO, H. J. Armstrong and H. R. Abbott (Canterbury CO, E. H. Severne (Nelson CO, D..1. Jones and R. E. Baeyertz (Auckland CO, E. S. Rutherfurd (New Plymouth. CO, L. Pleasants (Wanganui CO, E. J. Dyer and A. W. Gyles (Wellington CO, K. Beyer and F. K. Kelling (Wellington W.M. Club and Literary Institute). Mr. Purdy is not eligible for the New Zealand title, as he was born at Port Said. The board recommended that the six eliminated players be specially invited to enter for the minor tournament, and that the winner and runnerup of the minor tourney be entitled to compete in the championship tourney of 1936-37. According to present indications, there will be at least six competitors in the ladies' tourney, the entrance fee for which has been fixed at five shillings. The competitors in' the minor tourney include two players from Palmerston North and one each from Dunedin, Napier, and Wanganui. Entries for both these supplementary events will be received up to December 17. The entrance fee for the minor tourney is 10s 6d. • After hearing the report of the judge it was decided to make no award in respect of the game entered for the best recovery prize of last year's congress. & It was decided to congratulate the Canterbury Chess Club on its success in winning the club championship of the Dominion. The Bledisloe Cup, which was sent to Christchurch a fortnight ago, is to be engraved with the names of the winning clubs as follows: —1922-23, Auckland; 1923-24, Wellington; 1924-25, Wellington; 1925-26, Auckland; 1926-27, Wellington; 1927-28, Otago; 1928-29, Wellington; 1929-30, Wellington; 1930-31, Wellington; 1932----33, Otago; 1933-34, Wellington; 1934-35, Wellington; and 193^36, Canterbury. There was no contest in 1931-32. Since then the competition has been held on the', one-life system in order to save expense. The association's congratulations are also being tendered to the Hamilton Chess Club on winning the Blackburne Cup.; This trophy had been held by the Gisborne C.C. ever since it was donated seven' years ago by Mr. Charles Blackburne,' the then president of the Gisborne CC. Mr. E. H. Severne was elected to replace Mr. Kelling on the sub-committee which is arranging Mr. Purdy's impending tour of New Zealand. The draft itinerary has been improved by: allotting three days to Dunedin ■ and ■ three days to Christchurch. .: . " . The motion standing in the name of Mr. E. E. Hicks, that no player be allowed to compete for the New Zealand championship title who is not either the champion or an ex-champion of fin affiliated club, was not adopted. The report of the hon. treasurer, Mr. R. G. Didsbury, showed the association's finances to be in a satisfactory state. Subscriptions have come in well, and several clubs have given valued assistance to the congress funds through the one-shilling list. It was decided to make a grant of £25 to the congress funds, as in previous years. The association's correspondence has been unprecedentedly heavy during the present year, and-much time has been taken up at recent meetings in reading 'a'number of unimportant letters. It was therefore decided to leave it to the discretion: of the chairman and the hon. secretary to decide what correspondence should be read at future meetings. Matters left over for consideration early): in the coming year included . (a) representation of New Zealand at the Empire Congress in Johannesburg; (b) 'suggestions regarding telegraphic and wireless chess; (c) the suggestion of the Auckland Club that each club should send in its two best games every month for pooling and circulation; and (d) the recommendation of the Elimination Board for promoting the winner of the minor tourney. ■ '"■"•- The death of three prominent players who have served the game well were recorded with regret, ■ viz., Messrs. F. H. Bake well (Wellington), H. N. Maddox (Auckland), and.H. L. Thirtle (Masterton). ■ A hearty vote of thanks to the chairman closed the greeting. After a long discussion last night the Wellington School Committees and Educational Federation passed a resolution favouring the continuance of the old method of giving marks on school reports, there being a proposal that in future marks be discontinued and comment on the pupil's progress in each subject substituted. Culverhouse; guardian, Sister Alloway; conductor. Sister Reynard; lecture mistress. Sister E. Gibson; immediate Past N.G., Sister E. Shotter. Lodge honours were accorded district officers and also members from other city lodges and Valliy Lodge, Dunedin. Reports were received on meetings of the Hospital Association and Medical Institute. Loyal Rose of the Valley Lodge (Juvenile Branch).—Sister Audrey Wilson, president, conducted a wellattended meeting, there also being a number of adult visitors present. The elective secretary, Bro. England, advised the president that he had in hand forms for the admission of three new candidates. The conductor (Sister Ella Rushton) presented the candidates to the vice-president (Sister Dora Binns) and then to the I.P.P. (Sister Joan Pinfold) for initiation. The superintendent advised that arrangements were completed for holding a Christmas party at an early date. A visitor addressed the juveniles and wished them the season's greetings. At the conclusion of-the meeting the time was pleasantly spent, Bro. Seddon conducting a community sing, followed by items from the juveniles and then games.
