The Wairuna was reported on September ,23 to have been held up at Vancouver because the. crew'refused to give steam and permit the unloading of cargo from -Australia' because it was alleged they would'be handling unfair cargo; oh the ground that it had been handled-by strike-breakers during the Pacific Coast longshoremen's strike. Thirty-one members of the crew were arrested, and charged with desertion but were acquitted and ordered to return to the ship. The. crews of the Hauraki and the Monowai then refused to work the vessels at,an "unfair" port, and the crew of the Wairuna were reported in the same message to be awaiting release orders from the striking longshoremen.
