MARKETS IN INDIA
(To the Editor.)
Sir,— The following is an extract from a Simla paper expressed in New Zealand money of retail market quotations in Simla:—Butter, table 2s 2d per lb, cooking Is 9d; cream, Is Bid per lb; apples, table No. 1 Is 5d for 21b 26z, cooking BJd; ghee, Is per lb. Is it any wonder that just lately a Calcutta merchant tried to procure 2000 cases of apples from us at 16s? The ghee is of course adulterated, as it is impossible on those prices to supply pure butter ghee at Is. Our Government informs us that pure butter, ghee is worth from lOd to Is per lb New Zealand in India. Papers throughout India give very much the same market quotations as ihe Simla paper. lam informed New Zealand honey brings 2s 6d per lb in Bombay. Is it not time a New Zealand firm started a «00l storage business in
India and sold our products there? No doubt there is no direct cool storage steamer running, but surely it could be arranged? What is wrong with the people of this country?—l am, etc., J. F. T. BRIGGS.
