WHAT DO BUYERS WANT?
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I have noticed the interest that is being caused by the New Zealand manufacturers regarding the importation .of socks having in cases a percentage of cotton. Why this outcry? Anyone connected with the retail selling end of the trade is well aware that in the lower grade of socks a mixture of cotton prolongs the life of. the article, and this is proved by the average working man asking for the mixture. They fill a demand not met by cheap socks of New Zealand manufacture. .
The British maker is also competing successfully with the, finer makes, usually known as the 2s 6d sock, and if\he can -compete at the present time, what will he do when the exchange is lifted? It seems to the writer if the New Zealand woollen manufacturers concentrated more on the ;. standard qualities, and talked less on the lower grades which they never will be able to compete with it would be to their advantage. I aim speaking with a knowledge of the trade in New Zealand for over 25 years.-—I am, etc., "WELL WISHER" OF N.Z. PRODUCTS.
