ARGENTINE MEAT
LEVY MAY BE ACCEPTED
(From "The post's" Representative.) LONDON, September 14.
There are rumours that the Argentine is inclined to listen to the British Government on the question of a levy on their meat sent to Great Britain. Had they agreed to a levy on beef when it was first suggested, prolonged conferences with the Dominions would not have been necessary. Latest advices from South America indicate that the speech of the president of the British Chamber of Commerce, who is on a visit to the country, had some effect in changing the attitude of resistance to a levy. In any case, the Argentine Agreement will expire in November 1936, and the country will have to conform to the- dictation of the British Government. It, therefore, appears that the Argentine authorities now realise that better terms may be had now by making a new agreement rather than waiting for the expiration of the present agreement, when they will have to take whatever is given to them.
