PORT OF FOXTON

LOCAI^BODY CONFERENCE

(Special" to vthe "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Dayv A conference of local'bodies to be held in Palmerston North; next Monday may decide the fate of the port of Foxton. Recent floods in the river have so Silted up the fairway that boats are continually grounding on the sandbanks and the shipping companies / using the port are faced with added / expenditure. To clear the channel the Harbour Board desires.a -boat that will drag harrows along, the fiver bottom and stir up the silt which will then be carried to sea by the river. A suit- . able vessel can be secured at £900, and on Monday the Harbour, Board < will put forward a proposal to strike a rate to raise this amount.1 ' When the matter; was before the Manawatu County' Council yesterday it was pointed out that poultry farmers of the district were especially interested in the port being kept open, as its : closing would mean a big increase in' the cost of poultry foods. The port has .also facilities for shipping sheep and cattle to Addington market as well as for handling all classes of merchandise.

The view was expressed that the Harbour Board must either go on with its proposal or shut the port up..
