ALCHEMIC GOES SORE
GUINEAS TRIP CANCELLED
(Special from "Limited.") ■ : HAWERA, October 8. Several alterations in- the arrangements of the Hawera horses intended for the Auckland Spring Meeting have been found necessary, and as a result the centre will be represented by. only three horses, Gay Chief Bantry, and Lowenberg, at the fixture. Alchemic, J. Fryer's Great Northern Guineas hope, was found to have a slight filling round one of his tendons after galloping on Saturday morning, which, though not considered serious, i is sufficient to have caused.him to be eased up in his work for a day or two. Alchemic had been working splendidly and his prospects in the Northern Guineas were highly assessed. ■ Gay Chief has met with a couple of setbacks, but they are not of a serious nature and it. has. been decided to take him north.
The steeplechaser Just Off has been more or less sore during the past week, consequently his trip north has also been cancelled.
Bantry and Lowenberg have done a fair amount of work and both have made improvement since racing. Bantry is the better horse for a right-' handed course, and he will have the services of H. N. Wiggins. Lowenberg's chance, would be more highly [thought of on left-handed going, but [the Ellerslie mile is one of the best in the Dominion and may not unduly (hamper this long-striding colt, who will be piloted by B. H. Morris. On Saturday Bantry (Monkley) and I Alchemic (Sheild) ,galloped five furlongs the Ellerslie way round. Bantry; beginning more' smartly than usual, was with Alchemic all the way, the pair finishing together in imin 23£ sec.-' Over: the same course Lowenberg (Monkley) had Persen (Flower) as companion, the latter leading throughout and finishing a length in front in Imin 22& sec. These gallops were executed on the outside of the course proper.
Fergen is looking and doing well in his work, but his trainer (O. Cox) did not fancy trying him out severely in the Mitchelson Cup in view of his later engagements. Further work and a run at Trentham should fit him for his New Zealand Cup mission. J. Brown is giving Notium plenty of steady -work, and the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham should see the gelding an improved youngster. Carfex is bowling .along satisfactorily, and he will make another attempt to win the Cup at Wavevley on Labour Day. ' Last year, with 8.12, he ran second to Korokio, who carried 7.12. ■■■■-.-
W. Grindlay sprinted Silver Wings a couple of furlongs during the weekend, the mare showing plenty of speed. The same ttainer is schooling Dombey over the hurdles. In his last essay Dombey jumped splendidly, and he will probably be given his first race over the battens at Waverley. ; ■J. Fryer's Oriel has made good progress since arriving back, from Australia and is doing his track work in good style. He gave great promise as a jumper before being taken to the other side, and it, is intended to school him again shortly.
Aga Khan is coming on nicely and went a good gallop over five furlongs on the ; plough, finishing strongly, the last- half-mile being covered in 52sec..
; Ruri is. in great heart and .doing his, allotted pace work in good style. >9.
