PAEROA JUVENILE EVENTS
With only two starters each day the juvenile races .at » the Taumarunui Meeting last weekend were, most disappointing affairs, and as there Were only four runners each day last year it is possible that the club will drop these races at future meetings. 'Abbess of Whitby; who was' the winner on: Saturday; is a bay daughter of Gay, Shield and;the.' Quin AbbeyMountain Dream mare Abbey Dream, a half-sister to the former good steeplechaser Erie. She was not up to the class iii two earlier starts at the Avondale Meeting, but those two races probably assisted her a lot in her preparation. She is owned by Mr. L. Hjorth, of Cambridge: : ,
On the .second day the .winner was Te Maranui, -who had. been, beaten sevenlengths on the opening day but on this occasion":just; as ::easily beat y Astrid, who-was preferred to him in : the betting., Te,.Maranui is a bay geld-' 'mS. toy'Te:Monaniufrom'the Spalpeen —Cuiragnes mare Connemara, a halfsister to Lady Swift (dam of Gay Lap) and: Swift Bird (dam of Swift Spear I and the Trentham maiden Manurewa), and he is owned by Mr. L. J. Shaw. Astrid, who was making her race •debut on Monday, went freely, but she is likely to-do better later-on^ - She is a bay daughtei- of Tea Tray and the "Eucullus mare Billikins, a useful performer some seasons back, and she carries the same colours as King Rey. '- Although there were alsoi poor fields .at the meeting last year, the winners turned out to be among the best juveniles of the season. Gay Sheik was .successful on the opening day, beating Galilee, who turned the tables on the colt the second day when receiving 261b. ■■■-.■
