HEALTH STAMP

FIRST WEEK'S RECORD

LAST YEAR'S TOTAL REACHED

The first week of the Health Stamp Campaign for the children has demonstrated that throughout New Zealand committees of public-spirited men and women are taking most effective steps to bring before the notice of the people, even in the most remote backblocks, the claims of'the ( health camps upon their generosity. v All the. resources of the Post Office are behind;the national organisation of .the movement, and this without pecuniary advantage, because the Id extra paid for the health stamp goes without deduction into the' funds of the organisations in the localities where the money is raised. The services of postal officials 'iii: every place where there is a post office—and .there are 1769—have been readily given, and some of the. most effective money-rais-ing efforts recorded to date have-been initiated by postmasters of small to\vns who had the loyal co-operation of their staffs. For instance, the postman of one small country town suggested and carried out a house-to-house canvass for the health camp fund, realising in stamp sales, and donations a clear £53. Some'local' advertising was necessary, #irid the postal staff paid for this out of their own pockets.

The Health Stamp Campaign efforts of the! Post and Telegraph employees throughout New Zealand are being conducted; without pecuniary reward and with no diminution of their official duties, and their public-spirited attitude in this respect has won warm commendation' from /the DirectorGeneral of the Department, Mr. George McNamara.

The newspapers of the Dominion have thrown open their columns to the health camp movement in a most generous manner and nearly 400 picture theatres are displaying free of charge.the slides which remind the community of the appeal now' being made. The cause has gripped the imagination and sympathy of the community which, realises that despite the many other activities on behalf of children there was a gap now being filled by theprovision of health camps for under-nourished children. Last year health stamp sales realised approximately £900, but the spontaneous response to the call this year, both in personal service and monetary cbntributions, already gives assurance that last year's results have been exceeded.
