HERE AND THERE

A Bridge Party. A very, enjoyable bridge party was held at St. Mark's School recently in aid of the queen carnival. The hdstesses were Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Coote, and Miss Smith. The room was charmingly, decorated .with spring flowers. A delicious buffet afternoon tea was served in the dining-room. Among those Who arranged tables were Mrs. Hands, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Baigent, Mrs. Newman, Mrs. Kessel, Mrs. Walshe, Mrs. Stringer, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. McLean, Mrs. Hardie-Boys, Mrs. Lockwood, Mrs. Eaton, Mrs. Coad, Mrs. Black, .Mrs. Mathieson,- Mrs. Stevens Mrs. Donaldson, Mrs. Macklow, and Mrs. Ward. Pleasant Staff Dance. A very happy time was spent by members of the staff of Messrs. Gollin and Co., Ltd., and their friends recently when a dance was held in the Oriental Cabaret. There was excellent music, and the programme of oldtime and modern dances proved a most popular one. Many pretty frocks were worn, arid ..all the arrangements were well carried out, reflecting much credit on the committee. There were many guests, and all agreed that the dancewas an exceptionally pleasant and successful one. A Successful Tarty. Mrs. D. Ardell was hostess at a particularly pleasant party yesterday afternoon when she entertained a number of her friends. The lounge was bright with flowers, poppies in orange and lemoh tones, anemones,and dainty foliage and others making a delightful setting. A delicious sweet and savoury tea was served in the dining-room, the table being arranged with vases of crinoline jonquils, and mixed bowls of other flowers, with the ever-sweet mignonette as greenery. All the guests had a pleasant "chatty" time, and the hostess (who wore a frock of black arid white patterned crepe de chine, a black coat and wide hat) was cordially thanked by her guests. Among those present were Mrs. G. W. Forbes, Lady Ransom, Miss Carncross, Mrs. W. Perry, Mrs. J. O'Shea, Mrs.. A. D. Park, Mrs. H. Belshaw, Mrs. E. Gillon, Mrs. H. F. O'Leary, Mrs. T. N: Smallwood, Mrs. P. Thomson, and Miss Eita Thomson... . ■ Xaita Women's Institute." :.■ Mrs. 6. Craven presided over a fairly good attendance of members and visitors at a recent meeting of the Taita Women's Institute.. Remits: for the coming half-yearly meeting were discussed, and Mesdames Cooley and Pye were chosen as delegates. Miss Wilson and the members of the drama circle were congratulated on their success at the recent festival. The president appealed for more members to join both the drama and madrigal circles. The cooking competition was won by Mesdames Harris and Foster, the judges being Mesdames Spackman, Kitchen, and Ayres, who were the recipients of shoulder sprays. Mrs. Bonthorne showed goods made by the "Busy Bee" circle, and Mrs. Hunter gave a very clear demonstration of the malting of silk lampshades.- The hostesses served a dainty afternoon tea, and Mrs. Westbury-gave, two'delightful pianoforte solos. The.pinging \of the Nathional Anthem' brought a pleasant meeting to a.close... ■ - .. Masked Dance Tonight. Wellington dancers are reminded of the grand masked dance, organised by the ladies" auxiliary of the Port Nicholson Silver Band, which will be held tonight at Watkins's Hall, at the corner of Cuba and Vivian Streets. All arrangements have been finalised, and an enjoyable evening is assured. The j hall is being arranged cabaret style, and is being provided with tables for card playing. Any supporters of the band who are non-dancers but wish to help make the dance a financial success can assist: by making up card lours.
