KINDERGARTEN COUNCIL
RECORD OF ACTIVITIES
AN INTERESTING MEETING
Mrs. L. Nelson was welcomed as a new member at a recent meeting of the Wellington Free Kindergarten Council, and Mrs. C. Levin was unanimously elected to the council. Plans were made for the holding of a jumble sale next week, and the organisation of the "street day" collection in November was also discussed.
It was reported that during the month local committee representatives had met the kindergarten executive at the home of Mrs. Doctor, when a most interesting afternoon was spent in discuVing kindergarten activities generally. Mrs. Mac Lean, president of the Wellington South committee, reported a further donation of £10 from Mr. Digges-Smith for the building fund.' Plans and specifications for the new building had now been completed, and it was anticipated that the building would be commenced very, shortly. The Wellington South Committee was most enthusiastic in an endeavour to raise thj necessary finance to bring their school into being. Both committee and club were congratulated upon their efforts.
Interesting reports were read from all the local branches. Newtown is pla«s»ng a large bridge party, Berhampore an annual bazaar, and Ngaio Club has just held its sale of work' -which resulted in a clear profit .of £35. These activities serve to show something of the support which is given to the council by local committees and'clubs.
Appreciative mention was made by the many firms, who' had become subscribing members during' the month. To become a'Subscriber to the association, is one of the surest means of assisting to establish the work, and the council expressed sincere thanks to all who had helped in this -way; In a circular from the Free Kindergarten Union of Victoria the question is asked "Why should I help this great movement?" and the three answers given are as follows:—"(1) Because ifr is a constructive movement, seeking to form rather than, reform; (2) because it aims to prevent physical illness and maladjustments; and (3) because it provides the fight environment recommended by child research." These answers only have to be given thought for anyone to realise how very vital and far-reaching such a movement is.
It was decided to advertise the students' training course for next year at ah early date, so that applications may be finalised as far as possible before the Christmas holidays. The course, it was stated, is a particularly interesting" one, opening up many avenues of work and service for trainees. There.is no doubt that the training and care of little children*" is being given more and more thought by educational authorities of today, and that in the very near future a training such as that given by the Free Kindergarten Associations .will be widely recognised as one of vital importance/ At the present moment there. are many avenues open to fully qualified kindergarten teachers,, and the near future holds the promise of many.more, and of afar j wider recognition.
