SHAKESPEARE SOCIETY

A large number of visitors and members of the Shakespeare Society gathered in the N.Z.E.I. Club room, "Evening Post" Building, recently, when a most enjoyable, programme was presented by the society. On this occasion the society departed from- the usual reading of a complete Shakespearean play, and gave- a miscellaneous programme. The chair was occupied by the president, Mr. F. J. Jones.

Mr. W. A. Armour, M.A.. gave a most entertaining talk on "Juliqs Caesar in Shakespeare and in History," which was much enjoyed. Songs were sung by Miss Ann Gilpinand Mr. G. Wilson, .who responded to encores. Scenes from "Eomeo and Juliet" were arranged by Mrs. Martyn-Wnliams, and the parts taken were as follows:— "Juliet," Miss Betty Smith. (Featherston); "Romeo," Mr. Redmond Phillips; "Lady Capulet," Miss Sybil Mar-tyn-Williams; "Nurse," Miss Sara Walker; '■ "Capulet,":-Mr. F. Kennedy, all of whom were excellent in their parts. . Mrs. Burgess and Mr. Byron Brown gave excellent performances of the casket scene from "Merchant of Venice" and the forest scene from "As You Like It,"

A dainty supper was served, and votes of thanks were accorded to those taking part.
