GRADING OF TEAMS
W.C.A. COMPETITIONS
BIG SEASON AHEAD
The grading of the teams for this season's championship competitions under the auspices of, the Wellington Cricket Association has been completed. There will again be eight teams in. the senior championship competition, Karori taking the place of Institute. The draw for the first series of senior matches was announced at this week's meeting of the W.C.A. management committee, at which various details in connection with the season's programme were dealt with. A recommendation by the senior championship committee that, whenever possible, having regard to grounds available, one match only be played on the Basin Reserve was adopted. Mr. Phillipps reported that the old No. 1 wicket at the Basin Reserve had been shifted infield. An enormous amount of work had been done at the Basin Reserve, which was looking in excellent condition. In playing one match there, Mr.' PhilUpps said,- the senior championship committee would endeavour to see that it was the best match possible, with due regard to giving the district clubs their fair proportion of games oft their own grounds. .: . : LOWER GRADE ENTRIES. Reporting on the position so far as the lower grades were concerned, Mr. L. J. Brabin. (chairman of the junior! championship committee) said that the committee had carried out the practice of former years in promoting and relegating. The junior A champions of last. season were among those to be promoted, and in this connection he mentioned that Wellington College had been relegated to the junior A grade. When the college had been advanced to the second grade it was on the understanding 'that. its. team in that grade -fulfilled all engagements throughout the season; but with the college entries for this season there' was an intimation that the teams would not be able to play during the period from December 14 to February 3 (approximately). It was for that reason that the college's. first eleven had been placed back in the junior A grade. • ' ■ , . ■ % The corrected classified list of entries for the lower grades was tabled as follows:— Second Grade (10 teams).—Welling-, ton, Karori, Institute, Old Boys. University, Wellington College Old Boys, Hutt, Midland, Kilfiirnie, Stop - Out, and Technical Old Boys. REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES/ The senior championship committee recommended that, if possible, championship matches be not stopped when representative matches are being played, except in the case of matches with teams from overseas. The matter gave rise to some discussion, during which Messrs. Broad and Hanna opposed the principle. Mr. Hanna, however, was prepared to support the proposal for the coming season only, seeing that it would be a heavy one in the matter of representative matches. On the motion of Mr. Phillipps, seconded by Mr. Aim, it was decided that when Plunket Shield matches are played in Wellington this season the ordinary championship matches, if possible, be proceeded with. ' ' - ■ ■ ■ The Otago Cricket Association wrote suggesting that the WellingtonOtago Plunket Shield match at Dunedin be played on January 24, 25, 27, and 28. Noting that, four, days had been suggested, members raised the question as to whether the Plunket Shield Matches were to be confined to three days this season. The chairman pointed out that that matter would be discussed at the'biennial conference'to be held in Christchurch next month. It was decided to accept ttie dates suggested by Otago, subject to the fourth day being agreed upon. It was also decided to inform the Canterbury Association that in accepting its suggested dates for the Canterbury-Wellington' match at Wellington—December 28, 30, and 31—Wellington was leaving open the question of a fourth day for the match. ■ A request was received from the North Otago. Cricket Association for the Wellington team to play a match at Oamaru on its way to Dunedin. It was decided to inform the North Otago. Association of the suggested dates for the Wellington-Otago match, arid to ask for any.further suggestions it had to make regarding a visit from Wellington. ' .
Permission was granted for the following matches to be played' on Labour Day:—Kilbirnie v. Manawatu, at Palmerston North; Hutt v. Wairarapa (two matches), at Masterton; V.M.C.A. v. a Palnierston North team, at Wellington.
